Eisenhower administration was famously known for massive retaliation. Massive retaliation was the practice of pushing dangerous threats on someone in order to get your way. During the Cold War Eisenhower was pushing nuclear warfare on the soviets. If the nuclear warfare would have happened it would have led to mass casualties. The United States has used massive retaliation to get their way throughout history. American Power comes from our strong military and vicious government.

Using the fear that is instilled in the Soviets from the threat of Massive Retaliation, the Eisenhower administration very well may have prevented a Soviet advance to upon American soil.

Mass retaliation means in the event of an attack, one of the sides uses a force that is disproportionate to the other side or proposes a threat. Eisenhower, in the Cold War, relied on nuclear weapons as the primary means of defense. Eisenhower threatened the Soviets with blowing them up by using these weapons in order to prevent the Soviets from advancing, due to them being afraid for their safety and well being. The United States believed they held all the power since they were the ones with nuclear bombs, so Eisenhower was not afraid to use mass retaliation. The reliance on nuclear weapons shows that they were much more effective in threatening other countries.

During the time of the Cold War and the Eisenhower administration, mass retaliation was used against the Soviets. The idea of mass retaliation was used to intimidate the Soviets, as the U.S threatened to use nuclear power to protect its allies against communism. Mass retaliation is the idea that all extremes will be taken and any power necessary will be demonstrated to ensure that the U.S will get what they want. There is an idea of no mercy with mass retaliation and this demonstrated how the Eisenhower administration was willing to take advantage of and flaunt American power to get their way in this time of history.

The Eisenhower Administration as we all know was against communism, and America felt their “Free World” was under threat of attack by the Soviets developing technological weaponry. Massive Retaliation was the new mantra developed to counterbalance this perceived Soviet threat. The massive retaliation doctrine ensured the U.S. development of nuclear arms that would surpass any world threats. Since the U.S. maintained the upper-hand essentially President Eisenhower asserted his political/military ways and the threats of nuclear war resulted in a stand-off without nuclear conflict .
